Meet The Team: Tristan Owen
Tom Owen and Son Funeral Directors was established in 1930. We have been serving the local community and surrounding area for over 90 years. We are proud to be the oldest professionally qualified, independent, family-owned Funeral Directors in Llandudno, that last year welcomed the fourth generation of the family to the helm.
Tristan Owen was born in May 1989, to Scott and Jayne Owen. He attended Bodafon School, as well as attending Sunday School at St Hilary’s Church, Llanrhos. Age 11, Tristan won an award (a new bike!) for his story of a Formula 1 driver. His secondary school was St Gerard's in Bangor where he made many friends, he recalls the train journey every day was very long! Tris then joined Eirias school to attend sixth form.
Tristan recalls visiting grandad and dad in the office as a young boy where he loved the cars and helped to clean them.
Tristan left North Wales after he secured a place at Leeds University to study Engineering. He would return every other weekend and the holidays where he would help dad out on call outs. He received a first class Masters degree in Automotive Engineering and soon secured a job at Renold plc in the Engineering department as a graduate. His attention to detail and logical thinking made him a standout candidate for promotion and over the 8 years he spent there he was promoted 4 times. He combined his love of computers with his engineering background for a move to Project Management in the Business Systems team. He was responsible for the implementation of a £12m project to standardise the systems across the group, which saw him travel around the globe every month. Amongst others, he visited India, America, China and Germany regularly and that gave him an insight into other cultures.
It was at Renold plc that Tristan met Kelly. Love blossomed and they moved in together after a few years. They would regularly visit North Wales together for long weekends.
Joining Tom Owen and Son
In March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic saw the UK and the rest of the world put into lockdown. Tristan no longer travelled for work and working from home became the norm. It was during this lockdown that the question of Tristan returning to North Wales to take over the running of the family business came about. Tristan and Kelly jumped at the chance to relocate, moving to the beautiful coastline that Llandudno offers and to take Tom Owen and Son Funeral Directors forward as the next generation. That move happened in July 2020.
Since joining Tom Owen and Son Funeral Directors, Tris and Kelly have implemented many improvements. The business has a great foundation, having been established for over 90 years, but it hadn’t seen any investment in technology or modernisation for a few years.
A website and social media channels have been introduced. Tristan has created a new system to assist in the planning of funerals and all of the associated paperwork, the headstone and memorial business and an ashes and jewellery catalogue, all of which help free up time to focus on working with the families and caring for their loved ones.
They’ve created a new brand image for Tom Owen and Son, which is fresh, modern yet calming. Finally, they have implemented a much needed after care service to all families in the form of bereavement counselling and a bereavement support group that meets monthly.
In addition, Tristan and Kelly like to be involved in the local community of Llandudno. Whether that is sponsoring the annual Nick Beer 10k race or raising money for charity. Tom Owen and Son has been at the heart of the local community in North Wales for so many years.
A recent reviewer said "We honestly couldn't have asked for anyone better than Tristan! He was very professional at all times and nothing was too much trouble for him. Everybody was saying how it was the best service they have been to and I wanted nothing more for my grandfather, it was perfect! Thank you for everything Tristan. We've always used Tom Owen & Sons and will continue to do so."
In his spare time, Tristan likes to spend time at Maesdu Golf Club or with family and friends.
