Meet the Team: Tom Owen
Tom Owen and Son Funeral Directors was established in 1930. We have been serving the local community and surrounding area for over 90 years. We are proud to be the oldest professionally qualified independent family owned Funeral Directors in Llandudno, that has now welcomed the fourth generation of the family to the helm.
Back in 1899, in Mickle Trafford, in to the world came Tom Owen. Son of William and Maggie and brother to William, John and James.
However the family weren’t to stay in Mickle Trafford and in the early 1900’s, the whole family moved to Llandudno due to an outbreak of foot and mouth disease on the farm they lived on. They arrived by horse and cart and settled in to their new life. Tom was said to be 10 when they arrived in Llandudno.
Their dad gave each of the brothers a car to encourage them to stay within the local area, however the only ones to do so were Tom and William. Stewart joined the army and worked on breaking the enigma code at Bletchley Park.
In 1921, Tom Owen started a part-time funeral directing business, after helping out other local funeral directors in the area in his taxi. In 1930, he decided to start his own full-time funeral directing business. He purchased a small shop on Bodhyfryd Road, Llandudno which was next door to his home. The business has remained there ever since, albeit a lot different today!
Tom’s son, Peter joined the business in 1945 upon leaving school. The first funeral Tom and Peter undertook together, was of Tom’s mother.
Tom died in 1967, leaving behind a great legacy.
