Facing Mother's Day without Mum?

No matter how long it has been since you lost your Mum, we know that Mother's Day will never be an easy day. Especially when it feels like almost every company is advertising their products for treating Mum and that can trigger a whole load of emotions!

If you are dealing with your first Mother's Day without Mum, this is going to be an especially hard time. Or if you have been through this before, it might still bring up difficult emotions to deal with.

It is made so much more difficult when companies are splashing all over social media and on the tv their gifts to celebrate the mum in your life. We applaud Bloom and Wild for giving their customers the opportunity to opt-out of the Mother's Day emails since March 2019. We found this a really thoughtful and compassionate gesture.

It is really important to continue to celebrate your Mum and her spirit, which will help you maintain a connection to her.

Here are some ideas on how to cope with your grief in a way that works for you.

Write your mum a card

I reckon you always bought your Mum a card on Mother's Day, so why not carry on doing this beautiful tradition? You may find it helpful to write some heartfelt messages to her.

Visit a place that was special to mum

Perhaps mum had a place that was very special to her or both of you. Or perhaps you could visit her grave or where her ashes are. You can spend the time in that place reflecting on your memories of her and feel connected to her again.

Light a candle in memory of Mum

The ritual of lighting a candle to pay tribute to Mum, perhaps next to your favourite picture of her, can help. This is an easy way to feel at peace and take some time to think about Mum.

Have a celebration of Mum's life

If Mum liked to host a party, or maybe you do, then why not invite some of her nearest and dearest friends over to celebrate her life. You could cook her favourite meal or pour her favourite wine. Either way, you will find yourself surrounded by love.

Practice self care

We are all guilty of not looking after ourselves enough at times, so this is the perfect excuse to run that bath, take your coffee outside, curl up on the sofa and read that book you have been putting off. Perhaps have a little pamper too! Remember that you need to be kind to yourself today more than any!

Share memories of Mum with others

If you have children of your own, or perhaps a partner, why not get out some old photo albums and share your favourite stories about Mum? Perhaps she had some great achievements, or hobbies that fascinated you. Maybe her fashion sense left something to be desired or she was the best cook? Share these memories with those closest to you.
