Our Funeral Account is usually forwarded to the family or their solicitor, ten days (approximately) after the funeral has taken place. If requested, it can be sent earlier.
By law, a funeral account is the first claim on the estate of the deceased, and should under normal circumstances be settled by the estate within a month to five weeks upon receipt. Probate can take longer. With this in mind we are legally empowered to arrange an interest charge if the account is still outstanding after two months. Interest will be charged at 2% per month from the date on which the account was received.
The funeral can be paid for at any time prior to probate being granted. Those who choose to pay before probate will be reimbursed from the estate in due course. This saves the estate money (no interest charge) and enables us to keep our funeral costs down.
As you can appreciate, any business with outstanding accounts will suffer from costly bank charges. Therefore paying promptly is a saving to all concerned, in line with other Funeral Directors in the area, we are obliged to pay certain fees on your behalf, therefore we request that you settle the cost of either the burial fee or the Cremation and Doctors fee before the funeral takes place.
Many families take advantage of our facility to accept Visa, MasterCard, and Eur0card cards, as a way of settling the account. These offer one month’s credit, interest free. So paying wisely is the best plan.
We are obviously sensitive to the area of cost and the settling of funeral accounts, and are always willing to talk to you if you have any queries or problems.
Scott.
